Affordable Living
The Triangle region's leaders advocate that everyone live in a safe, secure home -- with access to jobs and services. However Triangle job centers confront a rapidly growing shortage of housing that people with low incomes can afford. Low-income employees must live far from jobs, often residing in substandard housing which endangers their health and safety. Long commutes contribute to traffic congestion and further diminish quality of life.
In 2002-03 TJCOG hosted a resource center to help local governments use planning tools to increase the stock of affordable housing, especially near jobs and transit. Lanier Blum directed the 2002-03 resource center. She can be reached at 919.956.4862 or lanier.blum@self-help.org.
