"Mary Sell was recognized as the 2016 Individual awardee for her dedication to reducing
transportation related emissions not only in her professional career but also in her personal life. In 2016, Mary facilitated the doubling of the transit subsidy for employees at TJCOG, leading to an increase in transit ridership for the organization by 100%. As the coordinator for the Best
Workplaces for Commuters (BWC) – Triangle Region, Mary has helped to grow the program to over 100,000 employees. The growth of the BWC program has helped local employers provide at least one primary and three secondary transportation benefits to all employees in the network. Some of these benefits include transit passes, telecommuting, ride-sharing, and many others. Outside of her position, Mary volunteers as a bicycle and pedestrian commissioner for the City of Raleigh, helping to provide guidance and leadership on all matters concerning bicycle and pedestrian activities in Raleigh. Mary also commutes to work almost entirely by public transit, reducing over 8,000 commuter miles each year."
